Review – IP68 Waterproof iPhone 7 Case

As an owner of both Lifeproof and Otterbox cases, I have a little bit of real world experience when it comes to waterproof cases for the iPhone. The IP68 had some bold claims to live up to not to mention comparisons to other products that are leaders in the field.

Notice I said had. I took and tested this case to the edge of what the claims state to ensure you get your money’s worth. Let’s run through the claims and tests.

IP68 Waterproof Rating

This is where it gets the name or at least the label on it. IP68 is the standard in which a case is designed to withstand water up to depths of 6.6′ for up to 30 minutes. I do not typically go a lot of places where I am that deep unless it is the ocean. I did not make it there for testing but did have it sitting in a 3′ deep tub of water for 20 minutes and again in a flowing river 3′ deep for 15 minutes. Knowing my lifestyle, that proved sufficient for me. See the waterproof tests below.

MIL STD 810G-516.6

This is the drop test from a height of 6.6 feet (2m) for 1000 times. While I did not do it 1000 times, I dropped it several times from over my 6′-0″ head and to be honest, I extended my arms to give me at least another foot. Again, no issue whatever and the case showed no physical scuffs or cuts except from when the edge slid along gravel for about 2′. And only then it was mild.

Better Design, Grip, and Usage

With some of the aforementioned cases, you have to purchase an extra adapter if you lose the one that comes with it. Additionally, you can ONLY use the Apple Certified cord in order to charge your phone. That is not the issue with this one. I used the Apple adapter as well as one from Five Below. Both worked equally as well, even though the head size was different.

Ergonomically, I like the grip and feel of this one a little better than the smooth sides of the others. By the way, it also comes with a wrist strap if you want it. Great for taking photos on the move or in the ocean and not having to worry about dropping your phone and testing the depth rating.

Snow, Water, Dust, and Shock Proof

I ran the iPhone 7 case through several tests from throwing it across a room, to throwing it in the air and it landing on gravel. After testing it with a dead phone, I committed and threw it with my everyday iPhone 7. Normally, I would sweat this kind of test, but it held firm to being tossed around like a rag doll and getting thrown in a puddle of water twenty feet away.

Mix everything above with what I consider “other” factors such as the YEAR Warranty like the other plus a 45-Day return or exchange service. Top that with a great representative who guided me through the sales process and asked me how I liked the case. Nina did a great job.

Closing thoughts

If you want to pay $60 to $90 for this type of case, then this is not the one for you. It retails at time of post for $18.99 here on Amazon.

Do I have anything negative to say? Yes. Only one which still makes it a contender with the big boys. If you compare the speaker with case on versus case off, it is not as loud. “Really Bill? Of course it is not going to be because there is a case on it.” The best part about this statement is, I had the same thing to say about the Lifeproof Fre.

Go get one or two. At this point, it is WELL worth it.

Thank you for your help Nina.

Until then,
