Pandemic Preparedness Guide – Review

The Pandemic Preparedness GuideThere has been a lot of information regarding the possibilities of a global pandemic. While this is something to be concerned about, not a lot of people have been able to explain exactly why. The Pandemic Preparedness Guide has filled in a lot of gaps and answered the why question, at least for me.

Ken McClelland broadens ones horizons by explaining not just the overall thoughts on a single pandemic outbreak, such as ebola or avian flu, but generalizes what the Average Joe is to look for and what are the reasons for such. By explaining the medical reasons without resorting to strictly medical jargon, which could leave someone like me confused, one is left with a better understanding of the value of preparing for such an event.

Originally my thought on this book was to give me a list of what to put in a bag and be done. However, Mr. McClelland, who coincidentally works for a government agency, decided to enlighten the reader through historic facts. These facts include the Flu Pandemic of 1918 and theories behind it, the SARS virus and the impact it had, and the Ebola virus and why there was such a scare around it.

While facts are facts, the information contained within the pages of The Pandemic Preparedness Guide will not necessarily scare you into fearing for your life. No, he did not use the fear, uncertainty, and doubt (FUD) tactic. Instead he uses the facts to help you see the possibilities of what could happen based off of historical evidence and current events. This information includes actual vaccine information that I certainly was not aware of.

One other subject that I found very interesting was the governmental reaction should a pandemic occur. Being from Phenix City, Alabama where Martial Law was declared in 1954, there has always been a lingering fact or thought of this happening again but on a greater scale. Ken addresses it from the theoretical side as well as the legal side with such things as The Posse Comitatus Act and presents the thoughts around a government mandated quarantine. Yes, the FEMA Camps.

While the reality may be that these things never happen, some people are literally scared to death over things like this. This is why they prepare and why they spend their lives locked in a house with the never ending fear of dying from germs. And if you are one of those people, I hope this article and the book will help give you a little relief.

If you are not one of the germ fearing few, this book will help you prepare by helping you use your instincts and putting plans into action should an event occur. I was thankful that Mr. McClelland did provide me a list so I could start stocking my shelves with some quality equipment even on a minor level. While my gear may not prevent a mass pandemic, it will prevent me and mine from getting sick initially and hopefully for us all to be able to ride it out if such an outbreak occurred.
