Believe it or not – camping in the cold winter season is possible and is, in fact, a truly enriching experience for many. Although it may sound uncanny, camping during the winter season makes a great idea for those who wish to experience something different— incredibly and astonishingly different.

OK, so you may be thinking, “Why on earth would anyone dare to camp during the extremely cold season?”  This was my initial thought. However, after experiencing for the first time, I finally understood why winter camping should be included in anyone’s bucket list.

For starters, you get a first-hand experience of tranquil camping. The summer campgrounds are no longer inundated with enthusiastic backpackers and campers. The surrounding is simply mesmerizing – snow-capped mountains and campgrounds, the frozen lakes, the sight of trees that have shed their leaves, and the sudden snowfall all encapsulate the joyful experience of winter camping.  The stunning landscape is just one of the many reasons you should consider camping during this season.

If you are ready to give this a try, then allow me to share with you five tips that can make your winter camping experience a true success.

Research and Choose a Realistic Campsite

Your choice of destination can make or break your entire winter camping experience. During the selection process, always consider striking the balance between your expectation and limitations.  Consider asking yourself this question whether you are comfortable with extreme cold or would you rather begin cultivating your winter camping experience in places with moderate weather conditions.

Before plunging into the idea, make sure that you are keen on checking the weather conditions, too. Know both the highs and the lows of the temperature. In addition, always double check if there are any snowstorms coming.  In short, always be in the loop of weather news and be prepared for any possible changes.

Prepare a Checklist and Pack All Essential Equipment

Comfort can only be achieved if you are ready to battle it out against the cold winter season. Let’s start with the tent. Having a 4-season tent is an absolute must unless you want to freeze in the cold.  To understand more about the basic essentials of tent-camping, head out and check Melanie’s knowledge about camping.  If you have set your mind to snow camping, see to it that you have packed an extra stove and extra fuel.

An all-weather fire starter is also imperative in winter camping.  Regular matches and lighters can easily get damp and you need to get yourself something that can withstand extreme weather conditions. Another tip is to have some cotton wool pads available during the camping to help you begin a fire more easily.

Get Your RV or Camper ‘Winterized’

No, winter camping is not all about you. Recreational vehicles tend to experience freezing water lines which can be such a huge headache during camping.  If your vehicle comes with a heater, make sure that it works before starting your journey.  In order to prevent residual water from freezing, you need to shop for some essentials before camping. These include about 2 liters of non-toxic antifreeze that is suitable for your vehicle, lubricant, and tools for dismantling the drain plugs. Make sure that you have a water-heater bypass kit and tubing for the pump inlet. Furthermore, keep your car’s manual handy.

Warm Your Sleeping Bag Before Sleeping

This is certainly one of the best ways to gain maximum comfort at night when the temperature is at its lowest. To do this, you just need to boil water and place it in a watertight container. You can place it in your sleeping bag just about 20 minutes before dozing off. The heat will let you have a more comfortable and enjoyable sleep at night. Moreover, it can also help you regulate your body temperature while sleeping.

Bundle Up and Bundle Up Even More!

Yes, wearing appropriate clothing is non-negotiable. Clothing essentials include wool socks, thermal underwear, warm boots, gloves, and warm jackets.  It is better to overdo your layering as you can adjust it depending on location.

There’s a lot your winter camping experience can offer. So, it is never a bad idea to experience it at least once in your life.  The most important tip of all – enjoy the experience and share it with other fellow camping enthusiasts!
